Groupon booking problems with restaurants, spas and activities
Experience deals fail at the booking stage more often than at the till. No availability, a slot cancelled by the business, or a surprise supplement all change what you are entitled to.
No availability before the deal expires
A deal you cannot book is a deal you cannot use. Contact the merchant using the number on the voucher page and ask, in writing where possible, for the earliest date they can offer. An email or text reply is the evidence that matters later; a phone call with no record is much harder to rely on.
If the first date offered falls after the promotional expiry, do not simply accept it. Say that the deal cannot be honoured within its own validity period and ask for a refund. Merchants who oversell a promotion often have a quota, and the fact that you were turned away is the substance of the claim.
The business cancelled your booking
Short-notice cancellations happen when a venue changes ownership, closes a treatment room, or drops out of the promotion partway through. Save the message that cancelled you, including the date and the reason given.
You then have a straightforward choice. Ask for a rebooking at a date that works, or ask for the money back. Because the cancellation came from the merchant rather than from you, the usual restrictions on refunds after the return window do not apply.
Surprise supplements and upsells on arrival
Legitimate supplements are printed in the deal's fine print — a weekend surcharge, a longer treatment, a set menu upgrade. Anything not listed there is being introduced after the sale and you are not obliged to pay it.
Screenshot the deal terms before you travel. When a charge appears that is not in those terms, decline politely, ask for the request in writing or photograph any sign, and report it. Deals that are consistently upsold are usually removed from sale once reported, and your purchase becomes refundable.
The venue has closed or gone out of business
A closed venue makes the voucher impossible to redeem, which entitles you to a full refund regardless of how long you have held it. A closure notice, an unanswered phone line over several days, or a review page showing permanent closure are all usable evidence.
Send what you have with the voucher number. Cases of this type are typically resolved quickly because the outcome is not in dispute — there is simply nothing left to redeem against.
Step-by-step
- 1Contact the merchant and ask in writing for the earliest available date.
- 2Compare that date with the promotional expiry printed on the voucher.
- 3Save every message: the cancellation, the refusal, or the request for extra payment.
- 4Screenshot the deal fine print so any supplement can be checked against it.
- 5Submit a request with the voucher number and that evidence to have the deal rebooked or refunded.
Frequently asked questions
- The merchant says they are fully booked for my Groupon. What now?
- Ask in writing for the next date they can offer. If there is no availability before the promotional expiry date, the deal cannot be used as sold and that is grounds for a full refund even outside the normal return window.
- My booking was cancelled by the business at short notice.
- Keep the cancellation message. A cancellation by the merchant is not a change of mind on your part, so the usual restrictions on refunds do not apply — you can ask for a rebooking or the money back.
- The business is asking for an extra payment on arrival.
- Only supplements printed in the deal's fine print are legitimate. Compare what is being asked against the deal terms on the voucher page, and if the charge is not listed, pay nothing extra and report it with a photo of the deal terms.
- I cannot use my deal before it expires. Do I lose the money?
- Usually not. After the promotional date the discount ends but the amount you paid normally stays valid towards the merchant's standard price. If the reason you could not book was a lack of availability, ask for a refund rather than accepting the reduced value.
