Groupon voucher not working? Here is how to fix it

Four things go wrong with Groupon vouchers: the code will not scan, the date has passed, the merchant says no, or it shows as already used. Each one has a fix.

Common causes and what to do

The code will not scan at the till

Scanners struggle with dimmed screens, cracked glass, and screenshots that have been cropped. Turn brightness to full, open the voucher from the Groupon app rather than a saved image, and ask the merchant to key in the redemption code manually — every voucher has a typed code beneath the barcode.

The voucher shows as expired

A Groupon voucher has two dates: the promotional expiry and the paid value. After the promotional date the deal discount stops, but the amount you paid normally remains valid indefinitely and can be put towards the merchant's standard price. If the voucher expired because the merchant had no availability, that is grounds for a full refund.

The merchant refuses to accept it

Some businesses stop honouring vouchers after a dispute with Groupon, or claim the deal is fully booked. Ask them to note the refusal in writing or take a photo of any sign, then open a case. A refusal by the merchant makes the purchase refundable regardless of the usual return window.

The voucher shows as already redeemed

This usually means the code was scanned twice, or a staff member marked it used before service. Send us the redemption timestamp shown in your account and the date you actually visited, and we can have the redemption reversed or the deal refunded.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Open the voucher in the Groupon app and check the status line beneath the code.
  2. 2Compare the promotional expiry date with today's date — paid value usually outlives it.
  3. 3Ask the merchant to type the redemption code in manually instead of scanning.
  4. 4Photograph the screen, the till message, or any refusal notice.
  5. 5Submit a request with the voucher number and those photos to open a tracked case.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Groupon voucher not working?
The most common causes are a barcode that will not scan, a promotional expiry date that has passed, a merchant refusing to honour the deal, or a code already marked as redeemed. Each of those has a fix, and the last three usually qualify for a refund or reissue.
Can I still use an expired Groupon voucher?
In most cases yes. After the promotional expiry date the discount ends but the amount you paid stays valid and can be applied towards the merchant's normal price. Final-sale and event deals are the main exceptions.
What do I do if the merchant will not accept my Groupon?
Ask for the refusal in writing or photograph any notice, then submit a request with your voucher number. A merchant refusal makes the deal refundable even outside the normal return window.
My voucher says already redeemed but I never used it. What now?
Send the redemption timestamp from your Groupon account along with the date you actually visited. Duplicate scans are common and the redemption can be reversed or the deal refunded.
