Groupon refund status explained

A refund can be approved and still be invisible on your statement for a week. Here is what each status actually means, how long each refund route takes, and when a delay stops being normal.

Where to find the status of your refund

Open your Groupon account and go to My Stuff, then My Groupons. Select the deal in question and look at the status line beneath it. A cancelled deal shows a refund line with a date and the destination of the money — either Groupon Bucks or the card ending in the last four digits you paid with. If the deal still shows as active, the cancellation has not been processed and no refund exists yet, no matter what an email said.

The email confirmation is the more useful document, because it records the exact time the refund was released and the amount. Keep it: if you later need your bank to trace the payment, they will ask for that date and amount.

Groupon Bucks versus a refund to your card

Groupon Bucks are site credit. They land almost instantly, never expire in the way a promotional voucher does, and can be spent on any deal — but they cannot be withdrawn as cash. If you were refunded in Bucks and you wanted your money back, say so quickly and before you spend any of the balance, because a partially spent credit is much harder to convert.

A refund to your original payment method is slower but final. Groupon releases the funds, the card scheme routes them, and your bank posts them. Three to five working days is typical for a UK debit card; credit cards and prepaid cards can take up to ten. Refunds do not usually appear as a new transaction at the top of your statement — many banks post them against the original purchase date, which is why people scroll past them.

When a delay stops being normal

Past ten working days from the processed date, treat the refund as stuck. There are three usual causes: the card you paid with has been cancelled or reissued, the refund was actually issued as Bucks and you were looking at the wrong balance, or the cancellation never completed and only a request was logged.

If your card was replaced, the refund still reaches you in most cases — banks map refunds to the new account automatically. Where it fails, the money bounces back to Groupon and has to be reissued to a different method, which needs a support case rather than a wait.

What to gather before you ask for help

Have four things ready: the order or voucher number, the exact amount, the date the refund was said to be processed, and the last four digits of the card. With those, a case can be pushed straight to a resolution rather than bouncing back for more information.

Screenshots help more than descriptions. A photo of the deal status line and of the bank statement page covering the expected refund window is usually enough to prove the money has not arrived.

Step-by-step

  1. 1Check the deal status in My Groupons and note whether the refund went to Bucks or your card.
  2. 2Count working days from the processed date, not from the day you asked.
  3. 3Search your statement around the original purchase date, not only the most recent entries.
  4. 4Confirm the card you paid with is still active and linked to the same account.
  5. 5If ten working days have passed, submit a request with the order number, amount, date and card ending.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Groupon refund take?
Groupon Bucks are usually credited within minutes of approval. A refund back to a card normally leaves Groupon the same day but takes three to ten working days to appear on your statement, because the money passes through the card scheme and your bank before it is posted.
Why does my Groupon refund say processed but the money is missing?
Processed means Groupon has released the refund, not that your bank has posted it. Most missing refunds are still sitting with the card issuer. If more than ten working days have passed since the processed date, ask your bank to trace the refund using the original transaction date, amount and merchant name.
Can I change a refund from Groupon Bucks to my card?
Sometimes. If the credit was issued as Groupon Bucks and you have not spent it, a request to convert it to the original payment method can be raised, though it is granted case by case and usually depends on how the deal was cancelled.
What if the refund was for less than I paid?
Partial refunds happen when a deal was partly redeemed, when a booking fee is non-refundable, or when only part of a multi-item order was cancelled. Ask for the refund breakdown in writing; if it does not match the deal terms you paid under, that is grounds for a dispute.
