Groupon payment problems and how to fix them
Double charges, pending holds, declined cards, wrong totals and refunds that never landed — what each one means, how long it should take, and what to send us so the money moves.
The five payment problems we see most
You were charged twice for the same deal
Duplicate charges usually happen when a payment page is refreshed, when the app retries a request on a weak connection, or when a card issuer places an authorisation hold that later settles alongside the real payment. Check your statement for two identical amounts on the same day. A genuine duplicate is always refunded in full to the card that paid — it is never converted to Groupon Bucks unless you ask for that. Send both order numbers, or one order number plus a screenshot of the two statement lines showing the amount, the date, and the last four digits of the card.
A pending charge appears for an order that failed
When a payment is declined at the final step, the bank can still hold the funds as a pending authorisation. That hold is not money Groupon has taken; it drops off automatically, typically within three to five working days, and up to ten for some prepaid and digital-only cards. If the hold is still showing after ten working days, open a case with the date and amount and we will supply the authorisation reference your bank needs to release it.
Your card keeps being declined at checkout
The most common causes are an address that does not match the card billing address, an expired card saved in the account, a 3-D Secure prompt that was closed before it completed, or a bank fraud rule that blocks unfamiliar merchants. Re-enter the card rather than using the saved copy, confirm the billing postcode exactly as your bank holds it, and complete the verification screen in the same browser tab. If the deal sells out while you fix this, tell us — we can often have the price honoured on the next available run.
The amount charged does not match the deal price
Differences almost always come from delivery charges added at the last step, local taxes applied by the merchant's region, a promo code that failed to attach, or currency conversion applied by your own bank rather than by Groupon. Compare the order confirmation total with the statement line: if the confirmation matches the deal and the statement is higher, the gap is a bank conversion or foreign-transaction fee. If the confirmation itself is wrong, that is a billing error and the difference is refundable.
A refund was issued but the money has not arrived
A refund leaves as soon as it is approved, but the receiving bank decides when it posts. Card refunds normally clear in five to ten working days, PayPal balances in one to three, and bank transfers up to fourteen. If the original card has since been cancelled or replaced, the money still routes to the same account in most cases — the issuer reassigns it. Beyond those windows, ask us for the acquirer reference number (ARN); your bank can trace the payment with it in minutes.
What to include when you report a billing issue
Billing cases are resolved fastest when the first message already contains everything a payment team needs to match the transaction. Include:
- The order number from your Groupon confirmation email.
- The exact amount, date, and currency shown on your statement.
- The last four digits of the card, or the PayPal email used.
- A screenshot of the statement lines, with everything except the relevant rows covered.
- Whether you want the money back on the card or as Groupon Bucks.
Never send a full card number, a CVV code, or an account password. No genuine support agent will ever ask for them, and the last four digits are enough to identify a payment.
How long each payment outcome takes
| Outcome | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Groupon Bucks credit | Same day |
| Pending authorisation released | 3–5 working days |
| Card or PayPal refund | 5–10 working days |
| Bank transfer refund | Up to 14 working days |
| Disputed or merchant-contested case | Up to 30 days |
Frequently asked questions
- Why was I charged twice by Groupon?
- A refreshed checkout page, a retried request on a weak connection, or an authorisation hold that settles alongside the real payment. Genuine duplicates are refunded in full to the original card, normally within five to ten working days of being verified.
- How long does a pending Groupon charge take to disappear?
- Authorisation holds from a failed payment usually drop off within three to five working days, and up to ten on prepaid or digital-only cards. Anything longer should be raised with the authorisation reference so your bank can release it.
- Why does Groupon keep declining my card?
- Mismatched billing address, an expired saved card, an incomplete 3-D Secure verification, or a bank fraud rule blocking a new merchant. Re-enter the card manually, check the billing postcode, and complete the verification screen in the same tab.
- My refund was approved but I have not received it. What now?
- Card refunds take five to ten working days, PayPal one to three, and bank transfers up to fourteen. Past that, request the acquirer reference number (ARN) from us and give it to your bank so they can trace the payment.
- Can I get a refund to my card instead of Groupon Bucks?
- Yes. Billing errors, duplicate charges, and merchant-fault cancellations are refunded to the original payment method by default, and you can request that method in other cases when you open the case.
